Pre-selecting songs

I sang last Thursday night in Mulligans of Amsterdam and, unusually for me, decided on a set list in advance. Since most of the groups and artists that perform there play Irish trad or folk I focused on folky songs, with an Irish connection in many cases – and all songs that I really like myself.  (The order may have been slightly different and they were broken into three sets of 45 minutes or so.)

  • Nother Ever Happens (Del Amitri)
  • The Crane Wife 3 (The Decemberists)
  • Volcano (Damien Rice)
  • Lua (Bright Eyes)
  • These Streets (Paolo Nutini)
  • I’ll Be Around (my own)
  • America (Paul Simon)
  • Ordinary Man (Christy Moore written by Peter Hames)
  • Kathleen (Josh Ritter)
  • Caledonia (Dougie McClean)
  • Fire and Rain (James Taylor)
  • At the Bottom of Everything (Bright Eyes)
  • Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of (U2)
  • Thousands Are Sailing (The Pogues written by Philip Chevron)
  • Faithful Departed (The Pogues written by Philip Chevron)
  • Moonshadow (Cat Stevens)
  • Half-hearted Love Affair (my own)
  • We Both Go Down Together (The Decemberists)
  • The Band Played Waltzing Mathilda (Eric Bogle)
  • The Temptation of Adam (Josh Ritter)
  • Debauchery (David Gray)
  • Moondance (Van Morrison)
  • One (U2)
  • A Pair of Brown Eyes (The Pogues)
  • The Night Before (my own)

I enjoyed the evening very much and I thought the selection of songs hung together quite well. I should probably give more thought to preparing set lists in future rather than doing my usual thing of making it up as I go along!
